A day at the beach in Lisbon
The closest beach to the center of Lisbon is Praia de Caxias and it’s just over 25 minutes away, next to Forte de São Bruno, a star-shaped fortress from the 17th century.
There are bigger and better beaches further down the coast, so this wouldn’t be the first choice in the region, but its proximity to the capital and distance from the train station makes it the best option for vacationers.
The beach is divided by Forte de São Bruno, a star-shaped fortress from the 17th century. At the café in front of the Fort you can drink and eat on the outdoor terrace in the shade of the palm trees.

How to get to Caxias Beach
Caxias is one of the stops on the Lisbon to Cascais train, which departs every 20 minutes from Lisbon’s Cais do Sodré station.
Lisbon Center
For those staying in the center of Lisbon, the best way to get to Cais do Sodré station is to take bus 728 or 735, which stops behind the Fado Museum.
You can also walk, it takes about 20 minutes
At Cais do Sodré station, take the train to Cascais and get off at Caxias station (6th stop). Cross the road and you’re at Praia de Caxias.
Moscavide
For those staying in Moscavide, the best way to get to Cais do Sodré station is by Metro
Take the metro in the direction of São Sebastião, change at Alameda station to the Blue line and get off at Cais do Sodré station (the last station).
At Cais do Sodré station, take the train to Cascais and get off at Caxias station (6th stop). Cross the road and you’re at Praia de Caxias
Alcântara
For those staying on the boats at Doca de Alcântara, take the train at Alcântara Station
At Alcântara station, take the train to Cascais and get off at Caxias station (4th stop). Cross the road and you’re at Praia de Caxias
Carcavelos Beach
An alternative is Carcavelos beach, the largest beach on the Cascais coastline with a stretch of sand over a kilometer long, which is famous for its waves and surf schools that attract many surfers and bodyboarders
Instead of getting off at Caxias station, you continue on the train for 4 more stations and get off at Carcavelos station. You then have to walk about 15 minutes from Carcavelos station.
The problem with the beach is the overcrowding at weekends and the longer distance (+25 minutes) to Lisbon.
