Appliances
When you rent an apartment that claims to have a ‘fully equipped kitchen,’ take a deep breath and remember: that term changes meaning depending on the GPS coordinates. In some places, it means there’s a washing machine with Wi-Fi. In others, it means there’s a fork, a bent pan, and a corkscrew with a dark past.
It’s one less guarantee… and one more immersive culinary adventure, with appliances that speak ancient languages, mysterious buttons, non-stick frying pans that have given up on life, and a washing machine that requires a master’s degree to operate.
To avoid surprises (and minor meltdowns), we’ve put together a list of what you’ll find in the apartment.
Small appliances
Oven and microwave
In most apartments, you will find a microwave oven, which can be used as both an oven and a microwave.
Induction hob
Depending on the apartment, you will find an induction hob with 2, 3 or 4 induction rings
The induction hob works by physical contact between the frying pan or saucepan and the induction rings. This means you must always place the frying pan or saucepan on the induction ring for it to work.
Exhaust fan
Refrigerator and freezer
Heat accumulator
Dishwasher
Washing machine and dryer

All apartments have a washing machine and dryer that — according to the manufacturer — is very easy to use after obtaining a master’s degree in ‘Deciphering Impossible Manuals Vol. III’.
To save you from wasting three hours, two coffees and half your sanity trying to figure out how it works, I have prepared this handy summary.
But be warned: use at your own risk. According to urban myths (and some traumatic experiences), these machines have a special talent for making exactly one sock disappear. Always one. Never the pair.
Why we don’t leave any laundry detergent
We always left a little out of courtesy. Until the day a guest with a strong sense of litigation and little skill in handling machines claimed that it ‘damaged’ her clothes and demanded compensation from the platform where she had made the reservation. They accepted. She received compensation. We were traumatised. So now it’s BYOD: (Blame your own detergent).
